Cited Domain— definition

In one sentence

A Cited Domain is the domain name of a source that a generative AI cites. Examples: wikipedia.org, nikkei.com, example.co.jp.

What does it look like in practice?

For example, suppose Perplexity cites three URLs in an answer to your question (illustrative):

  • https://example-research.com/... (Cited Domain: example-research.com)
  • https://example-news.co.jp/... (Cited Domain: example-news.co.jp)
  • https://geo-meters.com/... (Cited Domain: geo-meters.com)

These domain names are the Cited Domains for that question.

Why it matters

  • You see who the top citation sources are in your industry: Visibility into competitors and partners
  • You can grasp "what level" your own company is at: Are you on par with Wikipedia / government bodies, or still far behind?
  • It's useful for setting GEO goals: e.g., "make it into the top 10 Cited Domains of our industry"

Trends in the Japanese market

Based on GEO Meter observations, the Cited Domains that frequently appear in the Japanese market are mostly:

  • Wikipedia (ja.wikipedia.org)
  • Government domains (go.jp)
  • Industry media and the official sites of major companies

A practical goal is to first reach a level where you stand alongside industry media, with the ultimate end-state of GEO being that your own company becomes a top Cited Domain in your industry.
